Q: I love designer clothes, but not the prices. How can I look stylish for less?
A: If you're savvy, you can have designer clothes without paying budget-busting prices. Discounters such as Daffy's, Loehmann's and T.J. Maxx are a gold mine for reduced designer finds. Designer outlets also carry sharply discounted merchandise. To find lower-priced interpretations of high-end styles, start with some of the resources shown here, as well as cost-conscious retailers such as Target, Express and Ashley Stewart: All offer great quality takes on trends. Another alternative: Make use of a good tailor. Instead of waiting for that treasured piece parked in the back of your closet to come back in style, modernize it by having the hem adjusted, the collar removed or the shape tweaked. Going this route is often less expensive than redoing your wardrobe. Finally, check out what's in vintage and consignment shops. They're an especially good option for items like furs. "You can shear the hair length, alter the shape, or mix it with cashmere or leather," says furrier Tasos Karaguni of Funtastic Furs in New York City, who has been working with his clients' vintage furs to create modern pieces. With a little creativity, even buying on a budget offers endless options.
